This could use better labels. I stared at it for a long time before (I think) figuring out what is being shown. As far as I can tell, the light blue is all Academy Award nominee lengths, the orangish light red is all top grossing lengths, and the purple-ish area is where those overlap. Apparently we’re supposed to assume all of that from the color relations alone.
The “maximum length” and “minimum length” labels, on the other hand, seem to have no relation to the corresponding colors, nor to the specific year at which they appear. And why do we need labels for those at all? Surely the numbers on the axis are enough to indicate which way is lower, if not convention.
